Licking County Community Capitalism History

Community Capitalism began after a local citizen happened upon the book, Community Capitalism: Lessons from Kalamazoo and Beyond.  The book documents the economic development strategies used in Kalamazoo, Michigan to revitalize its economy. The book explains the core concepts of Kalamazoo's approach and long-term strategies by focusing community resources into key areas: place, capital, infrastructure, talent, and education.

The Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority negotiated to purchase more than a thousand books to distribute to community members in September of 2008 . Community members were asked to read the book and participate in one of three community meetings if the book resonated with them and their desire to improve their community. The Licking County Chamber of Commerce facilitated in setting up communication channels and over the course of several months, community assets were identified, working groups were formed based on 25 key issues, and Licking County Community Capitalism was established as a grassroots organization.
